The Next Big Things

I want it stated for the record: I predict that Janelle Monáe will be the next big thing in popular music. I’m not really one for publicly making predictions like that, as I always seem to get them horribly wrong. Also, I don’t often talk about new music on this blog; I mostly seem to write long rants about bad stereo placement on late 1960s albums and such like. So why am I giving raves to a new artist like Monáe? Well, I think if you watch the video below, you’ll understand why.

I was planning to write a load more, but I’ll let that performance speak for itself for the time being. Her album isn’t available in the UK yet and I don’t have her first EP, so I’ll wait until I’ve heard more, then I’ll report back. I’ll certainly be watching her career with great interest. Did that make me sound like Emperor Palpatine?

While I’m here, I’ll take a guess at what will be the other big single of the summer: ‘Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside’.

Broken Bells are a “Super duo” of producer Danger Mouse (from Gnarls Barkley) and singer/guitarist James Mercer (from The Shins). I’ve had their album for quite a while now, and it’s a pretty good listen, if not always very thrilling. “The Ghost Inside” is a real standout track though. It’s got the polished sound of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy and the songwriting is strong too. The choruses are in a falsetto style, which I usually hate, but it works surprisingly well. However, what really makes me think it’ll be a big hit is the fact that the upcoming music video is set to star the delightful Christina Hendricks! You might know her best from Mad Men and (if you’re a geek) Firefly. Anyway, enough of my inarticulate reviewing; here’s the song (minus the proper video).
